Ruth: Overturned expectations

I'm doing some studies in the books of Judges and Ruth, and I am currently reading a commentary written by a Jewish scholar on Ruth, Yehoshua Bachrach; it's called Mother of Royalty. It's got a variety of helpful insights, but two that I found particularly interesting come from Ruth chapter 2.

This chapter starts out by introducing Boaz, the wealthy, "mighty man of valor" and relative of Naomi's dead husband, whom one might naturally expect to take up the slack and fill the needs of Naomi and Ruth which were known to the town and which Boaz can intuit from what he has been 'fully told' (2:21). Yet, he does nothing apparently. Then 'by chance', Ruth ends up gleaning in his field, and when he speaks to her, he allows her to continue as one of the poor who glean in the corners of the field and offers her water. Her response to him contains a rebuke: "I am a foreigner. Why do you even care about me?" (2:10) He should have already cared and shown it:

Ruth’s remarks contained an unintentional reproach – a rebuke to the kinsman, the redeemer, who had ignored his own relatives and had allowed Naomi to sit at home, alone and hungry. Here was Naomi’s daughter-in-law. She had come to gather food for her aged mother-in-law. […] Was she not instead crying out in protest at all the humiliation inflicted on the entire house of Elimelech, so cruelly treated in Beth-lehem? (pg 85, emphasis mine)

Whether or not the reproach is intentional, Ruth is suddenly rebuking the 'mighty man of valor' who has not taken responsibility for his aged relative's poverty and has instead allowed a foreigner to do so! Indeed, Ruth's being a Moabite almost certainly told against her being socially accepted in Bethlehem according to the understanding of the Mosaic Law, but did it require others' inaction to care for her poor mother-in-law? Here was a 'foreign woman' who had acted upon YHWH's Law better than YHWH's people.

A bit later (2:19-20), we find another reversal of our expectations regarding this 'man of valor'. Instead of the wealthy man blessing the two widows, it is the two widows who have here blessed him, and one of them is a Moabite! Citing Yalkut Shim’oni, Ruth Rabba 5.9, Bachrach quotes:

More than the householder does for the poor man, the poor man does for the householder, for so Ruth said to Naomi: “The man’s name for whom I wrought.” She did not say “who wrought for me” but “for whom I wrought.” I wrought him many benefits in return for the one morsel of food which he gave me. (94, emphasis mine)

Even if Ruth is not quite as bold as the above comment suggests, this is still a remarkable set of verses as the order of blessing is unexpectedly overturned. Over and over in the LORD's system, we see that the weak, the poor, the unworthy, or the unknown are only so labeled in the eyes of those who don't see clearly. May we grow in seeing and being properly, as the One does!

2022 Reading

2022 included three features that guided much of my reading. First were the two excellent classes on Christianity and Islam which I took from ISRME, as well as the resulting book club. These launched me into readings on religion and religious thought as well as by a couple of authors from the Middle East. The second feature was packing up for a year in the States, and the third was the excellent inter-library loan system in Denver.

The goal of sorting through various books I'd been given or bought very cheap means that I flipped through, skimmed, or got gradually drawn into various books too, such as LaHaye's How to Win over Depression or Watson's The Godly Man's Picture. Although LaHaye's book has a few insights of value, mostly it just seemed very dated and insensitive in many comments. Watson's book had various thought-provoking aspects. Reading older (17th century) writers has that beauty of showing both how things (including language) change and how things (especially human beings) remain the same.

For ISRME, our first classes' reading involved complementary selections from Religious Affections (Edwards) and The Faith and Practice of al-Ghazali and James' Varieties of Religious Experiences. These authors formed a surprisingly cohesive dialogue in spite of the fact that they wrote centuries apart and in vastly different cultures. (previous post, another one)

City of Wrong by Kamel Hussein (on Archive) - A fictionalized meditation on the crucifixion and its surrounding events by a Muslim author. The version with the introduction by the translator Kenneth Cragg is particularly helpful as Cragg, a Christian friend of the author and respected scholar of Islam, offers a Christian perspective on the book which reflects their apparent friendship and dialogue and brings up the key issues in sympathetic discussion. Highly recommended for those interested in this area! (previous post)

Children of the Alley by Naguib Mahfouz - This book by an Egyptian author is an allegorical consideration of the Prophets, prophethood, and societies responses to them. It is an insightful fictional consideration from the Muslim perspective. Fascinatingly, there is also a 'prophet of modernity' as such. (previous post)

Prophetic Precursors by Wilson - a useful comparative study of the different histories and interpretations of the prophets in Christianity and Islam

T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets - With the encouragement of two dear friends, this poem has become an increasingly dear friend itself. This year I finally got a hard copy and read it through. Much marking up of it occurred.

Epidemics and Society (Snowden) - I'm only part way through this 2019 book on epidemics, but it's proven fascinating, particularly so given that Snowden wrote it pre-COVID. The section on the non-medical issues which epidemics create in societies was particularly interesting.

Whispering the Word: Hearing Women's Stories in the Old Testament - Jacqueline E. Lapsley - I've done a lot of reading in stories centered on the end of Judges and the book of Ruth this year. Lapsley's book was one of the most beautiful to read. It was scholarly, empathetic, and devotional all in one. Critically it engaged with the real critiques of feminists (Christian and otherwise) regarding these stories in substantive ways, which I found helpful in both their honesty and their faith-perspective. It's worth getting and reading.

The Sultan of Byzantium by Selçuk Altun - This was a 2021 Christmas gift after I'd come across it in a bookstore, and it has easily become my favorite novel by a Turkish author. It's themed a bit like a Byzantine version of Da Vinci Code, although it includes the episodic nature of other Turkish novels that I don't really love. It often lacks linkage between the various scenes. Anyways, it was quite enjoyable, and I'd recommend it for those looking for a new author: even my Turkish friends hadn't heard of this author.

Iron Dragon series (all 5 volumes) - I read the entire series for the first time this year: eighth century Viking, sci-fi, space saga involving futuristic and past time travel. Very fun!

The Lonely Sea by Alistair MacLean - short stories by a favorite fiction writer!

The Mysterious Mr. Quin (Harley Quin Mysteries) by Agatha Christie - I'd never heard of these, but really enjoyed the spiritual-mystery writings by this beloved author. Excellent short stories!

The Gift of the Stranger by David Smith and Barbara Cavill - a book that considers language education from a Christian perspective; I have really enjoyed reading the thoughts of others thinking about what I spend my job hours doing.

Albert Luthuli: Bound by Faith by Scott Couper -  I already posted about this informative biography and what I learned here.

Audiobooks: During our various travels in the last months, we have enjoyed various audiobooks. The key to a great audiobook is great content tied to a great reader  Here’s the ones we’ve most enjoyed as a family, enjoyable for all!

The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place (series) - written by Maryrose Wood, brilliantly read by Katherine Kellgren - accessible, humorous, mysterious, and educational as the author regularly uses and defines high-level vocabulary cleverly

The Tale of Despereaux - written by Kate Dicamillo, read by Graeme Malcolm - an exciting tale of a mouse, a serving girl, and a princess

Reread: The Simarillion (Tolkien) & The Eleventh Commandment (Archer)

God as the narrator in Judges?

"Above all, it is time to recognize that the narrator [of Judges] is aligned to such an extent with YHWH that we are drawn to the inevitable conclusion that they are one and the same." (pg 188)

How does the above quote strike you? It seems to resonate with the biblically conservative belief that Judges is the actual words of the God of Israel. And yet, it is in the final paragraph of an article in The Oxford Handbook of Biblical Narrative which draws on a variety of not-conservative theories or sources, (which is certainly not inherently negative). Along with various feminist sources, the author Deryn Guest writes an analysis 'where narrative criticism is also informed by queer theory, psychology, and the study of masculinities.' (186) The above quote is followed by these two sentences which end the article:

"YHWH's agenda is the narrator's agenda. The narrator/YHWH can evade scholarly critics no longer."

Thus, as I understand it, Guest is not so much suggesting that God condescended to communicate with humans, but rather that humans have identified themselves with God or a god of their own imaginings in Judges. So, while the first quotation caught my attention for the way in which it was expressed, actually the author is suggesting that YHWH may (must?!?) actually be subjected to scrutiny; God may not remain 'inscrutable' in Guest's words. In fact, this perspective was made explicit in the title of the article, "Judging YHWH in the Book of Judges."

But, what to do with this? Of course, believers in the Bible as God's Word must consider the actions and expressed words of God deeply. Yet, if the Maker of the Universe is actually as the Bible reveals him*, then our capacity for understanding must necessarily be limited. Those who cannot fully understand/grasp even those things of the creation that we know exist (e.g. the extent of the universe, quantum physics, or whatever the future frontiers of knowledge are) may certainly ask questions of the Creator, but can hardly stand as his judges. But, this isn't a new problem, is it? Isaiah talked of how the clay cannot back talk to the potter simply because it doesn't like things as they are. The biblical authors also wrestle frequently with the problems of pain, grief, and (delayed) divine judgment. Such questions seem to be okay, but in the biblical text, a line seems to be crossed if we move towards 'judging' God, when our 'why' turns to a 'how dare you!'

Interestingly in comments made about 'commentaries written with a believing audience in mind', the author seems to acknowledge that really the article was not meant to be beneficial for those who believe in the Bible as God's revelation (184). This dovetails with my own thoughts that the primary, though not only, benefit of the article is in a better understanding of those who do not see the Bible as divine revelation.

*If you are bothered by my use of 'his' when referring to the One who made all things, the Bible is quite clear that God does not have gender while also using masculine pronouns to refer to that One. This may seem like a linguistic tic since some languages don't distinguish gender in their pronouns, but in English, the choices are limited as they were in the languages the Bible was written in. This in many ways is a microcosm of the larger issue: we are talking about the infinite and divine in words that are finite and human; there is some necessary ambiguity which is caused by the limits of our knowledge, languages, abilities, and perspectives. So, we are left with what we were given and the call of faith is to be satisfied with it, at least for this life.

How many prophetesses are there in Scripture?

A while back in my office - it was probably around International Women's Day, the discussion arose about prophetesses and whether the Bible recorded any. The colleague I was talking to is a well-informed Muslim although she's not specifically trained in theology. She didn't remember any being mentioned in the Kuran although she thought it was reasonable to assume that some of the thousands of prophetic messengers that are referenced in the Kuran were women.

It seems likely to me that if one accepts both the speaking 'messenger' and speaking-writing 'prophet' within Islam as "prophets," it's quite likely that Eve, Mary the mother of Jesus, and other women could be considered prophets according to Islam. However, an internet search quickly shows that this is a disputed opinion, and it is certainly not one that I have the expertise to speak about.

Anyways, for the student of the Torah, Psalms, Prophetic and Gospel writings, it is certainly clear that there were prophetesses. In fact, they are listed throughout Scripture. So, a pop quiz:

How many prophetesses are named in the Bible? Who are they?

Who is the one in the Torah? Who are the two in the historical writings? Who is the one in the prophetic writings? Who is the one in the Gospel writings about Jesus? Who are the ones in the earliest church?

Miriam, the sister of Aaron and Moses - Exodus 15:20 - It is not mentioned whether she married or not in the Scripture themselves. Some tradition suggests she was.
Deborah - Judges 4-5 - Her husband is mentioned, but children are not.
Huldah - 2 Kings 22:14; 2 Chronicles 34:22 - Her husband is mentioned though children are not.
_?????_, unnamed wife of Isaiah - Isaiah 8:3 - Her husband was also a prophet; she had at least two sons. (Some suggest she may simply be being referred to as "the prophet's wife" in this passage, but many argue against this.)
Anna - Luke 2:36 - She had been married, but had been widowed for a long time when she sees Jesus and is mentioned as a prophetess. (related post on "The Odd Notion of 400 Silence Years")
The 4 Daughters of Philip - Acts 21:9 - These daughters are specifically mentioned as being unmarried at the time when they met Paul and Luke.

Each of these prophetesses, as well as the additional women and passages below, could be considered in a lot more detail in order to develop a thorough understanding of this area. The people and priests and kings of Israel would all come to these prophetesses to consult them about the word of the LORD. Personally, I wanted to have a clear answer to the question, but the answer will always depend on the phrasing of the questions. How many prophetesses of the Lord are NAMED in Scripture? 4 along with others who like many prophets in Israel remained unnamed. How many prophetesses of the Lord are mentioned in Scripture? 8.

Additional tidbits and relevant Scriptures:
  Joel 2:28-29; Acts 2:17-18 [cf 1:15; 2:1-4]; 1 Corinthians 11:5

Two women are mentioned as false prophetesses as well, Noadiah (Nehemiah 6:14) and Jezebel (Revelation 2:20). In the second case, the name might be figurative.

The Jewish Talmud (rabbis' discussions of the Scriptures) lists seven Jewish prophetesses: Sarah, Miriam, Deborah, Hannah, Abigail, Huldah, and Esther. (Megillah 14a) It is also gives the reasons each is considered a prophetess. It is interesting that the Talmud does not include Isaiah's wife.

a Biography of God

It might seem strange, or even presumptuous, to suggest that I have a biography of God, if you have not heard of the idea before.  In my first weeks at Bible college, Dr. O suggested to us that we should each create a biography of God.  I don't remember whether he gave suggestions on format, but the idea was that we compile truths about God from the Scriptures in order to meditate on them and to have them as a foundation and anchor for life.

At some point, I began pursuing this idea in a chart form.  To this point, I have found well about 450 names of God as given in the English Scriptures.  I trust the list will be useful to someone else; if you have any additions or corrections I'd love to see them.  (I suspect there are close to 500 names of God in Scripture as I continue to find more fairly regularly.)

Also, I have included references from every book of the Bible, with the obvious exceptions of the two books which don't refer to God by name (Esther, where God is known through providence; the Song of Songs where He is unreferenced as the great Lover of His own.)

* This list has 492 different names of God on it; occasionally different English translations have been used, but I have tried to prevent that expanding the number of names.

UPDATE: I have been finding and matching the corresponding names in Turkish as language practice.  This has been (and should continue) showing me additional names as well as corrections.  Thus, the list is growing; it also grows slowly from finding new names as I continue reading through the Scriptures.
