In book club, we just read Hannah Coulter by Wendell Berry. Berry has a beautiful way with words and an ability to describe the home scene with a depth of feeling and understanding. The book's not the sort I read a lot of, but it was well worth reading.
The thought from it that I want to pause with is the quote below regarding education. What is the purpose of education, intended, assumed or implied? Is the schoolhouse to be a gateway to a 'better' place? Or, is it a place to equip each enterer to be well where they are? Should it be one or both or neither?
The way of education leads away from home. That is what we learned from our children’s education.
The big idea of education, from first to last, is the idea of a better place. Not a better place where you are, because you want it to be better and have been to school and learned to make it better, but a better place somewhere else.
